Published by

President of India Ramnath Kovind appointed Justice NV Ramana as the 48th Chief Justice of India, accepting the recommendation of outgoing Chief Justice of India S. A. Bobde who is scheduled to retire on April 23.

In a setback to Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy, who had complained against Justice Ramana that he was interfering into the state judiciary with regard to politically sensitive cases, the Supreme Court dismissed his complaint two weeks ago. Jagan also alleged that Justice Ramana was trying to destabilize the government.

The complaint was dismissed after having a confidential In-House inquiry.

Justice Ramana will serve as the CJI till August 26, 2022. Ramana is a native of Andhra Pradesh. He was born into an agricultural family on August 27, 1957, in Ponnavaram village of Krishna district. On February 10, 1983, he got enrolled as an advocate and practiced in the High Court of Andhra Pradesh, Central and Andhra Pradesh Administrative Tirbunals and the Supreme Court of India in civil, criminal, constitutional, labour, service and election matters.

He also served as the additional advocate general of Andhra Pradesh and later appointed as a permanent judge of the Andhra Pradesh High Court in June 2000.

He was the Chief Justice of Andhra Pradesh High Court from March 10, 2013 to May 20, 2013.

Justice Ramana was also the Chief Justice of Delhi High Court before being elevated to the Supreme Court in February 2014.
