The Madras High Court has made some serious comments on Election Commission of India (ECI) for allowing political meetings, rallies and gatherings amidst the second wave of Covid-19. “The Election Commission is singularly responsible for the second wave of Covid and should probably be booked for murder said Chief Justice Sanjib Banerjee.
Based on a petition filed by a public representative on the measures to be taken on May 2nd which happens to be the results day, the Madras High Court made these comments. Further the court said, “constitutional authorities like EC had to be reminded of the fact that the public health is of paramount importance and it is only when a citizen survives that he will be able to exercise the rights that a democratic republic guarantees.”
The Madras High Court also threatened that it would stop the counting process, if the EC doesn’t come up with a blueprint on measures to be taken at counting centres.
Despite the outbreak, the elections are continuing. Bengal is in its seventh phase of polling and from media reports we hear that every second person in Kolkata is testing positive for Covid-19. These alarming situations and the elections could have been postponed. Well politics have power as its priority so nothing else matters.
