Actor-turned-politician Kamal Haasan, the chief of Makkal Needhi Maiam party in Tamil Nadu, is leading in Coimbatore (South) constituency. He fielded 42 candidates of the party in the recently held Assembly elections.
Haasan is leading against Congress candidate Mayura Jayakumar. Siginificantly, no other candidate of the MNM were found to be in the leading which clearly indicates that Haasan’s charisma had worked on the voters.
Floated in February 2018, the party had gone to the polls forging an alliance with the All India Samathuva Makkal Katchi led by R. Sarathkumar and T.R. Paarivendhar’s Indiay Jananayaga Katchi. Polling was held on April 6 and counting of votes began at 8 am this morning.
However, Haasan may or may not be the winner because he is just having a lead of 2,300 votes against Jayakumar and in any of the rounds, the Congress candidate can push him back.
If Kamal Haasan wins the election, he will be the only leader to walk into the Assembly both from the party as well as the MNM alliance.
In the past, when actor Vijaykant floated a political party, Tamilians, who are known for their fanaticism, voted him to power. They show their love towards the matinee idols through their votes unlike in neighbouring Andhra Pradesh where actor Pawan Kalyan, who is the chief of Jana Sena, could not win from either of the Assembly constituencies despite having strong fan base in the state.
