Even as Mamata Banerjee’s All India Trinamool Congress scored a massive victory, West Bengal CM and TMC chief Mamata Banerjee has lost in Nandigram Assembly constituency. She was defeated by her former aide and BJP candidate Suvendu Adhikari by 1736 votes. Mamata has conceded her defeat in Nandigram whereas the party won with a thumping majority.
In a nail-biting thriller victory, Suvendu has been declared as winner by the Election Commission after the final round of counting. This is in contrast to previous reports of Mamata winning Nandigram constituency by 1200 votes.
With Mamata losing the seat, still she could be the CM. However, she has to win as a MLA or MP of a constituency within 6 months. So, Mamata is going to contest the poll once again. It can be noted that Mamata had moved from her Bhabanipur constituency and contested in Nandigram against Suvendu. However, she was defeated by Suvendu.
Suvendu had won Nandigram in 2016 on TMC ticket. But Nandigram has been a bastion for the Trinamool Congress as the party has been winning the constituency since 2009. Suvendu had parted ways with TMC and joined BJP ahead of polls. However, Nandigram has given shock to Mamata by electing Suvendu.
