In yet another gruesome incident, at least eleven Covid-19 patients died at Tirupati’s government-run Ruia Hospital due to oxygen shortage in the ICU. Due to the late arrival of the oxygen tanker, the critical patients in the ICU had to wait for almost 45 minutes without oxygen.
Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Jagan Reddy expressed his grief over the matter and ordered for a high-level probe into the matter. Jagan will also likely visit the hospital today. On the other hand, Chittoor District Collector M. Harinarayanan said that they have avoided further tragedy by setting up bulk oxygen tankers on time. He said doctors on duty could avoid a much worse situation. “There was a drop in oxygen pressure initially. But we have immediately set up bulk oxygen cylinders to avert a disaster. It’s unfortunate that 11 people lost their lives,” he said.
Among 1000 beds in Ruia, 700 Covid-19 patients are undergoing treatment in the ICU and another 300 are in normal wards. This is not the first in the country where oxygen shortage in ICU led to deaths. In this month, we also heard how 24 patients had died in Chamarajanagar district hospital in Karnataka allegedly due to lack of oxygen supply. In last month, 20 Covid-19 patients in Delhi’s Jaipur Golden Hospital died after the hospital ran out of oxygen.

Many of the patients’ relatives destroyed ICU rooms. Nurses and other hospital workers ran out amid the chaos.
