COVID Crisis: PM Modi’s Popularity Rating Drops Drastically

Published by

India is battling a severe Corona Crisis and Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government at the center is facing a lot of criticism for handling the same. Amidst this, it is now reported that the approval ratings of Narendra Modi have fallen to a new low. The ratings have fallen for the first time in the seven years, and according to a US data intelligence company, Modi’s overall ratings this week stand at 63%.

Indian polling agency CVOTER also conducted a survey and found that the Prime Minister’s performance had dropped to 37% from around 65% a year ago. For the first time in seven years, many respondents expressed their dissatisfaction with the Modi government’s performance.

The US data intelligence company started tracking Modi’s popularity in 2019 and they revealed that the big decline happened in April this year when his net approval dropped 22 points.

Although there is a decline in the ratings, Modi continues to be the popular politician in the country. The mismanagement of the vaccine distribution, medical supplies, and the poor way of handling the crisis in the cities like Mumbai and Delhi is said to be the major reason for the fall in ratings.

Narendra Modi assumed office in 2014 with a great majority and was re-elected in 2019 with a much bigger mandate. In 2019, the Bharatiya Janata Party won the General Elections, securing 303 seats out of 542 on its own. However, things are not going as expected for the BJP in the entire country, amidst the Corona crisis.
