India desperately needs Covid-19 vaccines even though the second wave is in a downward trend. While the vaccine manufacturing companies are struggling to meet the demand, there is a panic among the public. Under these circumstances, the available vaccines should be utilized with utmost care.
Over the last few months we have heard many cases of vaccines getting wasted across several states. The union government is still evaluating the data and from the latest reports Jharkhand is the worst state in vaccine waste.
On the contrary Kerala and West Bengal states are the best in reporting low wastages. The south state and East state have reported a negative of -6.3 percent and -5.4 percent vaccine wastage respectively. This means Kerala and Bengal have saved 1.1 Lakh and 1.6 Lakh doses respectively. This is a remarkable feat and both the state governments should be highly appreciated for this exemplary work.
Jharkhand and Chhattisgarh are the worst states in wasting the vails with 33.95 percent and 15.79 percent wastage respectively. Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s home state Gujarat reported 3.6 per cent wastage.
Other states in the country should definitely take a cue from Kerala and Bengal and administer the vaccine accordingly.
Meanwhile from 21st of this month, India will be rolling out vaccines at free of cost for 18 years above.
