New gel made from milk protein and gold nanoparticles shows potential in reducing blood alcohol levels, promising relief from hangovers. Developed by ETH Zurich researchers, the gel intercepts alcohol in the digestive tract, breaking it down into less-toxic acetic acid, thus preventing the production of acetaldehyde. Tests in mice demonstrated a 50pc reduction in blood alcohol levels within 30 minutes. Human trials are pending.
