History at Paralympics: Avani wins gold medal

Published by

19-year-old Avani Lekhara scripted history at Tokyo’s Paralympics by winning a Gold medal in the women’s 10m air rifle standing SH1 event. By winning the medal, Avani has become the first Indian woman to win a gold medal at Paralympics.

Avani suffered spinal cord injuries in a car accident in 2012 and she took up shooting in 2015. She topped the podium by finishing with a world record equalling total of 249.6, which is also a new Paralympic record. Avani is the fourth Indian athlete to win a Paralympics gold.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi was delighted with Avani’s feat. “Phenomenal performance @AvaniLekhara! Congratulations on winning a hard-earned and well-deserved Gold, made possible due to your industrious nature and passion towards shooting. This is truly a special moment for Indian sports. Best wishes for your future endeavours,” tweeted PM Modi.

In other segments, Yogesh Kathuniya has won Silver medal in F56 discus throw while Devendra Jhajharia and Sundar Singh Gurjar have won Silver and Bronze medals respectively in javelin throw.

PM Modi also congratulated other athletes who have won a medal. Overall it was a great day for India at the Paralympics.
