We have concluded the Paralympics with the largest ever medal haul: five gold, eight silver and six bronze medals in Tokyo. That is a total of 19 medals.
This is the first-ever largest haul as India’s previous best tally was four medals at the 2016 Games in Rio de Janeiro. In fact, India had a total medal count of 12 before the Tokyo Paralympics, but the tally now stands at 31.
The country gets the first medal of the Games through Bhavinaben Patel, a silver in table tennis women’s singles (Class 4), while Krishna Nagar won gold in badminton men’s singles (SH6) on the last day of the Games.
Indian shooters brought home two gold medals, and five in total. Avani Lekhara and Singhraj Adana won two medals each. The country also got four medals in the high jump, three in javelin throw and one in the discus throw. Javelin thrower Sumit Antil secured a gold medal and shuttlers, Pramod Bhagat and Krishna Nagar both won gold.
Now that the Tokyo Paralympics 2020 is coming to an end, shooter Avani Lekhara will be India’s flag-bearer in the closing ceremony at the Olympic Stadium, on Sunday.
