We are done with 47 matches in the league stage of IPL as of now. There are only nine matches left and two of the playoff positions are wide open with five teams fighting to get those spots. While Chennai Super Kings and Delhi Capitals have already qualified for the playoffs, Sunrisers Hyderabad is out of contention with just only two wins in its 11 games.
The five teams that are fighting for the two playoff spots are Royal Challengers Bangalore, Kolkata Knight Riders, Punjab Kings, Rajasthan Royals, and Mumbai Indians.
RCB is in a better position compared to the rest of the teams as it won seven out of 11 games. It now has 14 points in hand. It has to win two out of the last three games to seal the playoff spot for sure. It can also get through by winning only one game but provided the other results come in their favor.
The situation of the other four teams is a bit tricky. PBKS, KKR, MI, and RR have 10 points each from 12 games. If we consider RCB getting the third playoff spot, it means that these four teams are fighting for the fourth position.
KKR needs to win their two matches for sure and have to hope that the other three teams don’t win more than a game in their respective fixtures. The same is the case with RR and PBKS too.
Mumbai is in a dangerous position with a bad net run rate. It needs to win the rest of the matches and also hope that the other teams lose their games badly so that their net run-rate falls drastically lower than MI.
