The name of MS Dhoni is synonymous with the Chennai Super Kings. Such is the bond he has with the franchise and its fans. Dhoni has been leading CSK since its inception in 2008. Under his leadership, the team won four titles, in 2010, 2011, 2018, and 2021.
IPL will feature two new teams from next year and thus, there will be a mega auction held in early 2022. Each team is allowed to retain a maximum of four players. It is certain that Chennai Super Kings will retain MS Dhoni.
However, Dhoni remained tight-lipped about it in his interviews. But Chennai Super Kings’ owner N. Sreenivasan affirmed that Dhoni will be their first option for retention. He said Dhoni wanted the retention policy to come out and thus, gave different answers on various occasions.
“MS Dhoni is a fair person, he wants retention policy to come out as he doesn’t want CSK to lose lots money while retaining him – that is why he gives different reply to everyone,” said Sreenivasan in an interview with the Editorji.
A franchise should spend Rs. 16 crores on its first choice player during retention, if it plans to retain four players. It has to spend Rs. 15 crores if it plans to retain three players. 14 crores should be spent on that player if the franchise plans to retain 1-2 players. It is being heard that CSK may retain 3-4 players for the next edition, including Dhoni.
The former skipper of Team India is expected to play the 2022 season of IPL. After that, even if he doesn’t continue as a player, he may serve CSK as a mentor.
