Wimbledon: 20-year-old Carlos Beats Novak Djokovic

Published by

In recent years, Novak Djokovic has dominated the men’s tennis scene, overpowering everyone who faced him on the court. However, the 20-year-old Carlos Alcaraz stands out as a different breed of player, showcasing exceptional on-court talents and unwavering mental strength. Despite his body giving in to the tension in a previous encounter with Djokovic, Alcaraz staged a remarkable comeback, rallying from a set deficit to defeat Djokovic 1-6, 7-6 (6), 6-1, 3-6, 6-4 and claim his first Wimbledon title.

At just 20 years old, Alcaraz created history and became the third-youngest player to win the Wimbledon men’s singles title, following in the footsteps of Boris Becker and Bjorn Borg. His second Grand Slam title establishes him as the first new male player since Stan Wawrinka in 2015 to win multiple major titles.

By halting Djokovic’s four-year reign at Wimbledon, Alcaraz also denied the Serbian player the opportunity to equal Roger Federer’s record of eight Wimbledon titles. Alcaraz’s victory required immense self-belief, determination, and exceptional shotmaking.

Notably, Alcaraz became the first player in a decade to defeat Djokovic on Centre Court, with the last player being Andy Murray in the 2013 final.

Djokovic initially took the lead in their highly anticipated match-up, displaying his experience on the court. He was sharp from the start, showcasing exceptional returns, minimizing mistakes, and deflecting Alcaraz’s powerful forehands.

As Alcaraz struggled to find his rhythm, he quickly trailed 5-0, and Djokovic sealed a near-flawless set with just two unforced errors.
