WC: Rahul and Kohli’s fightback brings victory to India

Published by

India kicked off their ICC World Cup 2023 campaign with a spectacular win against Australia, courtesy of a stellar partnership between Virat Kohli and KL Rahul. Although neither batsman managed to cross the century mark, their resilient alliance of 165 runs turned the tide in India’s favour, securing a well-deserved victory.

In what proved to be a challenging chase, India was tasked with pursuing a seemingly attainable target of 200 runs set by Australia. However, India’s top order endured a severe setback early in their innings. Opener Ishan Kishan was sent back to the pavilion without scoring a run, falling victim to a golden duck in the very first over. The second over witnessed Josh Hazlewood’s clinical dismissal of Rohit Sharma and Shreyas Iyer, both failing to make an impact with the bat. With the scoreboard displaying a worrisome 2/3, India appeared to be teetering on the brink of disaster.

Yet, the partnership of Virat Kohli (85) and KL Rahul (97*) proved to be the turning point of the match. The duo exhibited remarkable composure, adopting a cautious approach without taking unnecessary risks. Instead, they focused on constructing a stable partnership that gradually swung the momentum in India’s favour. Both batsmen reached their respective half-centuries during this process, with Kohli narrowly missing out on a century as he was dismissed for a commendable 85 runs, courtesy of Hazlewood’s (3/38) brilliance. Nevertheless, by the time Kohli departed, India had established a commanding position. KL Rahul, alongside Hardik Pandya, guided the team to a comfortable win, with Rahul remaining unbeaten at 97 runs, tantalizingly close to his century.

On the opposite side, the Australian batters struggled with the challenges posed by the sluggish pitch conditions. The early dismissal of opener Mitchell Marsh by Jasprit Bumrah in the third over put Australia on the back foot. However, the experienced pair of David Warner (41) and Steve Smith (46) came to Australia’s rescue, forging a 69-run partnership for the second wicket, thereby stabilizing their innings. It was Kuldeep Yadav who ultimately broke this vital partnership by dismissing Warner. As the innings progressed, Ravindra Jadeja took centre stage, systematically dismantling the Australian batting order. His impressive haul included the dismissals of Smith, Labuschagne, and Alex Carey. While Mitchell Starc put up a brief solo resistance, he found himself lacking support from his fellow batsmen. Starc’s (28) valiant stand came to an end towards the latter stages of the innings, resulting in Australia being bowled out for 199 runs in 49.3 overs. Jadeja (3/28) led the bowling charge with three wickets, while Kuldeep (2/42) and Bumrah (2/35) contributed with two wickets each.

With this significant win, India now looks ahead to their next encounter, as they prepare to face Afghanistan on October 11 in Delhi. In the meantime, Australia will regroup and seek a comeback when they take on South Africa on October 12 in Lucknow.

Match Summary:

Australia: 199/10 (49.3 overs)
India: 201/4 (41.2 overs)
