On his 35th birthday, Virat Kohli celebrated by equaling Sachin Tendulkar’s record of 49 ODI hundreds. He achieved this milestone during India’s World Cup match against South Africa in Kolkata. Kohli reached his 49th century in the 49th over of India’s innings, scoring an unbeaten 101 off 121 balls.
Kohli got to this milestone in his 277th innings in his 289th ODI match. While Tendulkar achieved his 49th century in his 451st ODI innings, Kohli accomplished this feat more quickly.
Kohli’s innings played a crucial role in guiding India to a total of 326, and he credited his partnership with Shreyas Iyer for maintaining the team’s momentum. They put together a 134-run partnership for the third wicket.
In the 2023 World Cup, Kohli has already scored two centuries and four half-centuries in eight league games, making him the second-highest run-scorer in the tournament. His prolific year in the ODI format includes over 1000 runs with five centuries, surpassing Tendulkar’s record of seven instances of scoring more than 1000 ODI runs in a year.
Kohli expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to play for India on his birthday and said he was blessed to have such moments. He also emphasized the importance of maintaining momentum and rotating the strike in challenging batting conditions.
On the other hand, Sachin Tendulkar also responded to this achievement by Virat Kohli via X.
