In what could be termed as the biggest embarassment ever in its cricketing history, the Indian team has suffered a whitewash defeat against a visiting team for the first time after it started playing tests. The Kiwis secured 25 run victory in the third test in Mumbai and completed the whitewash to emerge as the first team to achieve the rare feat against India in its backyard.
Earlier in the day, Newzealand set a modest target of 146 runs before India after getting dismissed for 171 in the second innings. Ajaz Patel claimed six wickets in the second innings after his fifer in the first innings. In its chase to avoid a humiliating whitewash, India was bundled out for 121 runs to handover a thrilling 3-0 to Newzealand. India lost the first two tests in Bengaluru and Pune and conceded the series which is the first ever loss at home since 2013.
After losing in the first test, rank turners were prepared for both the second and the third tests. But, this strategy proved to be counterproductive as Indian batsman struggled to tackle Newzealand’s spinners Ajaz Patel and Michael Santner. Star players like Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma failed to contribute with their poor performances in the series.
Rishabh Pant tried to counterattack the opposition spinners. But, he was dismissed after a quick fifty in both innings, only to derail the innings. Shubman Gill scored 90 in the first innings, but failed to follow it up with a decent innings when the team needed the most.
A whitewash at home which is perceived as an invincible fortress will mark the biggest low in the cricketing chapter of team India. They will next travel to Australia for Border Gavaskar trophy.
