India’s legendary spinner Ravichandran Ashwin announced his retirement from international cricket. Ashwin made this shocking announcement after the test between India and Australia ended up as a draw. No one saw this coming as Ashwin was a part of the current squad and even Ashwin didn’t reveal the reason behind it. He just said, “I won’t take too much of your time. Today will be the last day for me as an Indian cricketer.”
In 14 years of his career, Ashwin emerged as one of the spin legends in world cricket. In 106 Tests he played, he took 537 wickets and became the second-highest wicket-taker among Indians in Test cricket, placed only behind Anil Kumble (619 wickets). Overall, he is the seventh-highest wicket-taker in Test Cricket.
The 38-year-old cricketer played only one of the first three games in the ongoing Border Gavaskar Trophy and picked up one wicket. Ashwin holds the record as the fastest bowler to reach 250, 300, 350, 400, 450, and 500 Test wickets. With 37 five-wicket hauls in Test cricket, he ranks third, behind Muttiah Muralitharan and Shane Warne. He also holds the record of dismissing the most number of lest-handers in Tests (268).
Ashwin represented India in 116 ODIs and 65 T20Is and took 156 and 72 wickets respectively. Ashwin was a part of the 2011 World Cup-winning Indian squad and the 2013 Champion Trophy-winning side. Indian cricket fans and the entire cricketing world were shocked by Ashwin’s decision and opined that he deserved a better farewell. Meanwhile, Ashwin will continue to play league cricket. He will be a part of Chennai Super Kings in IPL 2025.
