Whatsapp Banned 2 Million Indian Accounts!

Published by

Messaging-giant Whatsapp announced that it had banned 2 million Indian accounts between May 15 to June 15, in order to obstruct the harmful behavior and spam on the platform. It also received 345 grievance reports within the same period. Whatsapp revealed these facts in its maiden monthly compliance report.

The new IT rules instructed the large digital platforms with over five million users to publish compliance reports every month. They also need to submit the details of complaints and action taken. As a part of this new rule, Whatsapp has submitted its first compliance report.

“Our top focus is preventing accounts from sending harmful or unwanted messages at scale. We maintain advanced capabilities to identify these accounts sending a high or abnormal rate of messages and banned 2 million accounts in India alone from May 15-June 15 attempting this kind of abuse,” stated Whatsapp in an official note.

The organization identifies Indian accounts through a +91-phone number. Apparently, 95% of the bans are due to the unauthorized use of bulk or automated messaging.

Whatsapp also stated that these accounts are banned proactively, without depending on any user reports. Apparently, about eight million accounts get banned globally on average every month.

The Facebook-owned platform also stated that along with the help of advanced AI tools, it also depends on available unencrypted information including, profile pictures, group photos, and user reports, to detect malicious and fake accounts.
