Smita Sabharwal, who is an Indian Administrative Service officer belonging to the Telangana cadre, tweeted yesterday congratulating collector Sweta Mohanty, Hyderabad City Police, and the Department of Women Development & Child Welfare for rescuing 83 children that were found begging on the streets of Hyderabad.
Along with the rescued children picture, Sabharwal wrote “Kudos to the team of Sweta Mohanty, WCDTelangana, HydcityPolice that led to rescues of 83 children from Gulbarga who were used for begging in Hyderabad. The kids have been safely returned to their parents, after DNA check and counselling”.
Among the rescued children, some are below 5 years old. There are begging rackets and are getting bigger of late. Children are being trafficked from other states and forced to beg in big cities where they get more alms in these places.
The children who were rescued were presented before Child welfare and on Committee’s directions, further action has been taken. There are around 30,000 beggars in Hyderabad. However, this number could have increased significantly after the COVID-19 pandemic. The daylong action carried out in major squares of the city by cops and child welfare is truly commendable.
