India’s Day 8 at Tokyo Olympics: Big Disappointment!

Indian Athletes at the Tokyo Olympics are playing to their best. However, on the 8th day, the Indian fans are left with a massive disappointment. Stars like Atanu Das and PV Sindhu disappointed big time. Both lost their crucial games. Atanu was left with no hope for the medal but PV Sindhu will have to play one more game to grab the Bronze medal. The following is a roundup of the events that took place on Saturday.

Equestrian

India’s first Equestrian Olympic since Sydney Olympics (2000), Fouaad Mirza had an impressive Olympic debut this morning. In the eventing dressage round, he remained in 9th position out of 62 competitors. Next, there will be a cross-country test which will be held on Sunday.

Discus Throw

In Women’s Discuss Throw qualifications, India’s Seema Punia made a foul. In her second and third throws, she scored 60.57 m and 58.93 m. She could not qualify. However, Kamalpreet Kaur entered the finals with the qualifying mark of 64m and she finished 2nd overall in Qualification.

Golf

After Round 3, Anirban Lahiri is at T28. Udayan Mane is up to T55.

Archery

Ace Indian Archer Atanu Das got knocked out from the tournament in Quarter Finals held earlier today. He was defeated by Japan’s Furukawa Takaharu with a score of 6-4.

Boxing

In Men’s Fly (48-52 kg), India’s big medal hope and top seed Amit Panghal was eliminated in the 2nd round (52kg); and he lost to Rio Olympic Silver medalist. Amit had received 1st round Bye.

In the Women’s Middle (69-75 kg) Quarterfinals, India’s Pooja Rani was defeated by LI Qian of China.

Shooting

In 50m Rifle 3 Pos Women’s qualifications, India’s Moudgil Anjum and Sawant Tejaswini were not qualified to Quarter Finals.

Sailing

In the 10th, 11th and 12th races held together, India’s KC Ganapathy and Varun Takkar finished in 16th, 9th, and 14th places respectively. They finished the tournament by remaining in 17 th place overall. Only, top ten make it to the final.

Hockey

In Women’s Pool A hockey, India won against South Africa and stormed into the quarter-finals by a 4-3 score. For India to go through, Ireland should either lose or play out a draw against Great Britain later today.

Badminton

India’s biggest hope PV Sindhu was knocked out in the semi-final match that took place on Saturday against Chinese Taipei’s Tai Tzu-Ying. Sindhu lost both sets and she did not show any fight. However, her medal hopes are still alive as she will play a bronze medal match tomorrow.

Long Jump

In Men’s Long Jump, India’s Murali Sreeshankar is OUT of contention for the Final. He scored least in all his three attempts.
