The crisis in Ukraine is getting deeper with each passing hour. In order to take immediate measures against Russia for its intrusion, the United States of America has brought a resolution in the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) calling for Russia to withdraw from Ukraine.
15 nations have taken part in the voting process for the US backed resolution and no surprises here as India abstained (Declined to vote) on the resolution. India, China and the United Arab Emirates are the only three nations that abstained from voting while 11 countries voted against Russia while Russia, which is chairing the VETO, remained neutral.
India has its reasons for this strange decision and speaking on it India’s permanent representative to UN TS Tirumurti said, “India is deeply concerned at the recent turn of events in Ukraine. All member states need to honour these principles in finding a constructive way forward. Dialogue is the only answer to settling differences and disputes, however daunting that may appear at the moment. It is a matter of regret that the path of diplomacy was given up. We must return to it. For all these reasons, India has chosen to abstain on this resolution.”
