It’s all happening in the Ukraine and Russia conflict. Fresh reports say that Russia President Putin has asked to put nuclear arms on standby and if this happens, that could lead to devastating consequences all over the globe.
But the big question is why is the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), an intergovernmental military alliance between 28 European countries and 2 North American countries, not getting involved in the Ukraine and Russian conflict.
Indian defence analysts Syed Ata Hasnain and Shokin Chauhan have valid explanations for NATO’s reluctance. Firstly they opined that if NATO intervenes, it would be a World War 3 and its implications are immeasurable.
“NATO is saying that Ukraine is a non-NATO country and so they are not sending their troops. But in Iraq and Afghanistan which are both non-NATO countries, the USA and NATO were involved heavily. The reason being the opponents are weak in both the countries and Russia is no ordinary force. Though Russia’s military power is less, NATO is in no mood to take risk,” said the experts.
NATO has significant troops on the Western Ukraine but the moment the NATO forces breach into the Ukraine air, the war would begin. “In case of Balakot, India did not enter Pakistan Occupied Kashmir (POK) but they directly hit the mainland of Pakistan and were confined to a particular reason. India had specific target and they are terrorists. And in the case of Ukraine, there are larger dimensions to take note of. NATO can provide air cover to Ukraine but the moment NATO crosses the boundary physically, it’s a war,” said Syed Hasnain.
The experts also believe that Russia’s Putin warning the Western countries, especially NATO, that if they intervene in this aggression, it would have a larger impact, has worked in his favour. NATO has wisely kept out of Ukraine for the same reason.
These observations from the Defence analysts make sense and they were really spot on when India and Pakistan’s conflict took place.
