The glamorous Oscars 2022 was held last night at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood, Los Angeles. It was a special one as it is the biggest Hollywood night after the pandemic, witnessing some of the biggest names walk the red carpet. Just like every year, the Academy paid tribute via the Memoriam reel to several film personalities and artists who passed away last year.
And the video this time remembered great names such as Sidney Poitier, Betty White, and William Hurt. It is sad to learn that Indian legends Dilip Kumar and Lata Mangeshkar were not mentioned in the video. In fact, after the Live telecast, several Indians expressed their disappointment on not including Indian legendary personalities Dilip Kumar and Lata Mangeshkar.
For the unversed, the Oscars In Memoriam hardly pays tributes to singers or musicians. But it certainly never misses including actors. In the past too, the Academy paid tribute to the late Sridevi. The legendary actor Dilip Kumar, who passed away last year, is known as the first Khan of Bollywood and had a glorious five decades of an acting career.
His exclusion and the absence of India’s giant Lata from the 2022 Oscars ceremony was a glaring one, especially after the British Academy Film and Television Awards (BAFTA) honoured the two earlier this month. Noted film critic also took to Twitter to share his thoughts. “The ‘In Memoriam’ segment really should have featured these two legends. Inexcusable omission. #TheOscars,” Sen tweeted.
