Hyderabad, one among the worst-affected cities in the country due to Covid, has bagged a rare feat. The city has now been ranked among the 20 Most Surveilled Cities in the world. Hyderabad has been ranked as the 16th Most Surveilled City in the world. UK-based Comparitech, a firm that reviews technology services like VPN, anti-virus and apps, has published an annual report over the World’s Most Surveilled Cities.
While the 18 cities out of the World’s 20 most surveilled cities were Chinese cities, only two cities were outside of China to make it to the Top 20 list. London and Hyderabad are the two cities outside of China in the Top 20 list. While the City of Dreams (London) stood at No. 3 in the Top 20 list, the City of Pearls (Hyderabad) stood at 16th position.
Telangana state DGP M Mahender Reddy corroborated the same and appreciated all the stakeholders behind this feat. He wrote, “UK #Comparitech Rept : #HyderabadCity with 3Lakh surveillance cameras ranked 16 among the Top20 #MostSurveilledCities across the world. (*Usage, No.of cameras & Safety). Congratulations to all the stakeholders firstly #TheCommunities for making the city a safer place to live in.”
Hyderabad, which has over 1 crore population, has about 3 lakh CCTV cameras installed at the prominent places in the city. So for every 1000 people in the city, 29.99 CCTV cameras are there. Interestingly, Taiyuan city in China stood at No.1 with highest CCTV cameras i.e 4,65,255 CCTVs. Taiyuan with a population of 38.91 lakh people, the security cameras to population ratio of the city was at 119.57 CCTV cameras per 1,000 people. However, the crime index of the Taiyuan city is 51.47 whereas the crime index of Hyderabad city is 43.46.
