Chaos prevailed at the Chandigarh University near Mohali in Punjab late after midnight as eight girl students attempted suicide after their videos while in the washrooms were reportedly leaked.
A massive protest erupted on the premises of the university as hundreds of girl students demanded that the leaked videos and pictures of as many as 60 of them, which were objectionable, should be removed from porn sites.
According to the reports, one of the girl students shot the videos of 60 of her mates in the hostel and sent them to her male friend who later posted them on porn sites. The accused girl student has been taken into custody and is being interrogated.
Viewing their videos on the porn sites, many of the girls reportedly fainted.
On information, the police rushed to the institution. The irate students entered into an argument with the police while a few tried to set ablaze the police vehicles.
Mohali police chief Vivek Soni said that an FIR has been registered in the matter. No death has been reported relating to the incident, he said.
The police chief also ruled out attempt to suicide by any of the students. One of the girl students was shifted to a hospital in an ambulance and she was suffering from anxiety, he said.
He also said that as per their investigation, they found only one video of the accused herself. “We found only one video and it was of the accused herself. She had not recorded any other video of anyone else. Electronic devices and mobile phones have been taken into custody and would be sent for forensic examination,” said Vivek Soni.
Chandigarh University Pro-Chancellor Dr. RS Bawa said that there was no truth in the reports that 60 objectionable MMS have been found of the girl students. The accused shot her own video and shared it to her boyfriend, he said.
Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann ordered a high-level inquiry into the incident. Punjab State Women Commission Chairperson Manisha Gulati said that an investigation into the matter was underway.
Delhi Chief Minister and president of AAP, the ruling party in Punjab, Arvind Kejriwal termed the incident “shameful” and called for patience.
