Adani siblings are competing with each other in accumulating wealth. Gautam Adani has become the world’s second richest person after Elon Musk while his elder brother Vinod Shantilal Adani, based in Dubai, is the richest NRI, according to the IIFL Wealth Hurun India Rich List 2022.
Vinod Adani runs businesses in Singapore, Dubai, and Jakarta. Last year, his wealth increased 28 per cent or Rs 37,400 crore and he scaled up two ranks to be in the sixth position in India’s top 10 rich list this year. There are 94 NRIs in the rich list and the elder Adani, who made Rs 102 crore every day on an average last year, tops them.
During the last five years, Vinod Adani’s wealth increased by 850 per cent, totaling Rs 1,69,000 crore.
The Hinduja brothers are the second in the NRI list with a wealth of Rs 1.65 lakh crore. Then comes steel tycoon LN Mittal with Rs 1.5 lakh crore, Jay Chaudhry, Anil Agarwal, Yusuff Ali, Shapoor Pallonji Mistry, Sri Prakash Lohia, Rakesh Gangwal and Vivek Chaand Sehgal.
Significantly, in the NRI rich list, 88 per cent are self-made. With 48 individuals based in America, the USA is the most preferred country for NRIs, followed by the UAE and the UK.
According to the IIFL report, Vinod Adani’s rank moved up from 49th position in 2018 to the sixth place this year and his net worth increased by 28% or ₹36,969 crore.
Now, both the Adani brothers’ total wealth stands at ₹12,63,400 crore, or nearly 40% of the top ten in the Hurun India Rich List 2022, which ranked a total of 1,103 Indians.
Vinod Adani began his career with powerlooms in Mumbai’s Bhiwandi in 1976 and then expanded into the international market by opening an office in Singapore.
Then he moved to Singapore to operate the business and later, settled in Dubai, where he began trading in sugar, oil, aluminium, copper and iron scrap.
