Chief Justice of India Uday Umesh Lalit will be retiring on November 8th and recently the Union Minister of Law and Justice Kiren Rijiju had written to the CJI requesting him to name the successor. Earlier in the day CJI UU Lalit nominated Justice D.Y. Chandrachud as his successor.
If the government of India accepts CJI Lalit’s nomination, Justice Chandrachud will be the next Chief Justice and his tenure will last for two years till November 11th, 2024. Coincidentally Chandrachud might become the 50th Chief Justice of India.
Briefly about Justice Chandrachud, he is an Economics graduate from St. Stephen’s College in New Delhi. He obtained an LLM degree and a Doctorate in Juridical Sciences (SJD) from Harvard Law School, USA. Justice Chandrachud was appointed judge of the Supreme Court on May 13th, 2016. Before that he served as the Chief Justice of the Allahabad High Court from October 31st, 2013.
Justice Chandrachud is known for his notable judgments. Recently he prenounced a verdict upholding the rights of unmarried women to seek abortion of pregnancy up to 24 weeks. This was reckoned as a historic judgment. Besides this Justice Chandrachud was part of the Constitution Benches which decriminalized consensual homosexuality, recognized privacy as a fundamental right under Article 21, decriminalized adultery.
