Post taking over Rashtrapati Bhavan, President Droupadi Murmu’s maiden two-day visit to Andhra Pradesh is scheduled today and tomorrow. But this visit of the President has brought troubles for pigs as the Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC) reportedly shot down 185 stray pigs within the city limits.
President Droupadi Murmu will be participating in the Navy Day celebrations and she will witness the Indian Navy’s operational demonstration. Besides this, President Murmu will virtually inaugurate and lay the foundation stone for projects of ministries of Defence, Road Transport and Highways, and Tribal Affairs.
In view of the President’s visit, the state government has taken up the arrangements. The GVMC got busy decorating the city and the issue of stray pigs came to their notice. The city of Vizag is home to roughly 5000 pigs (stray & meat providers). The public health officials have asked the owners to take the pigs out of the city. Around 1000 pigs have been shifted on Saturday by the owners while some were reluctant.
The GVMC undertook a special drive and shot down 185 stray pigs but the GVMC officials covered up this issue that the pigs have been spreading diseases and obstructing traffic. In view of public safety, they initiated this drive and professional shooters were roped to hunt down the pigs.
Animal activist of Vizag city raised objections over this and added that the GVMC should have provided a shelter for stray pigs and moved them out of the city later. This is a cruel act, said the activist.
