An industrialist named B K Goenka, who is the chairman of the Welspun Group, has reportedly purchased India’s costliest apartment located in the luxury tower in Worli, Mumbai. The 30,000 square foot triplex penthouse, located on the 63rd, 64th and 65th floors of Tower B of the skyscraper, was sold for a staggering ₹240 crore.
According to Pankaj Kapoor, the founder and managing director of Liases Foras, a real estate rating and research firm, this is the most expensive apartment sold in India to date. Kapoor also mentions that there may be more deals in the ultra-luxury segment in the next two months as the capital gains allowed to be invested under Section 54 have been limited to ₹10 crore from April 2023.
The penthouse offers a beautiful view of the seaside and is 100 times the size of the 300 square foot free space allocated to slum families in Mumbai under the government’s slum rehabilitation scheme. This luxurious property is more expensive than the 10,000 square foot apartment purchased by the Jindal family, who run a pharmaceutical firm, for ₹160 crore in 2015 and the quadruplex bought by actor Ranveer Singh for ₹119 crore in 2022.
