Veteran Bollywood actress Sharmila Tagore has reminisced about her iconic roles in the film industry, including the controversial bikini scene in “An Evening in Paris” and the success of her film “Aradhana.” Speaking candidly at an event in Delhi titled “Breaking the Boundaries: An Accidental Actor to an Idol,” Tagore explained how her bikini scene in the 1967 film had shocked both the public and the film industry. The scene had even led to questions being raised in Parliament about the film’s content. However, Tagore pointed out that compared to modern films, the scene would appear “very innocent.”
Tagore recalled how, in order to maintain her serious reputation as an actress, she moved on to more content-driven roles in films such as “Amar Prem” and “Avishkar.” When “Aradhana” was offered to her, Tagore jumped at the opportunity. She likened the film’s success to that of SS Rajamouli’s “RRR” and explained how, despite a Hindi boycott at the time, the film ran for more than 50 weeks in non-Hindi speaking areas of northeastern and southern India. The success of “Aradhana” highlighted the fact that good content can transcend language barriers and be appreciated by audiences across the country, regardless of the region they come from.
Tagore’s career-defining films have left a lasting impact on the Indian film industry. Her performance in “Aradhana” alongside Rajesh Khanna was unforgettable, and songs such as “Roop Tera Mastana” and “Mere Sapno Ki Rani” have become cult classics. According to IMDb, “Aradhana” ran for three years in theaters across southern India and was a platinum jubilee hit across the country.
Tagore has taken a break from acting in recent years, with her last film appearance being a brief role in the 2013 film “Break Ke Baad.” However, the actress recently made a comeback in the Hotstar original film “Gulmohar” after a 13-year hiatus. Sharmila Tagore’s contributions to the Indian film industry have undoubtedly paved the way for future actresses and will continue to be celebrated for generations to come.
