Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), India’s largest IT services firm, is currently witnessing a higher attrition rate, particularly among its female employees, as the company discontinues remote work. The new policy implemented by TCS has not been well-received by women employees, leading to a steady increase in resignations.
The decision to end work from home (WFH) is cited as a major factor contributing to the rapid resignation of female employees, according to TCS. The IT firm has been known for providing numerous employment opportunities for women, as it emphasizes gender diversity in its workforce.
TCS, which has over 600,000 employees, with women comprising 35 percent of the workforce, managed to retain 38.1 percent of its female employees in the fiscal year 2023. It should be noted, however, that TCS experienced a significant workforce reduction of over 20 percent in the previous fiscal year.
Milind Lakkad, the head of human resources at TCS, acknowledged that there has been a higher rate of resignations among female employees since the company ended remote work. While there may be other contributing factors, this appears to be the primary reason. Lakkad emphasized that the resignations were not driven by discrimination and mentioned that traditionally, women at TCS had a lower resignation rate compared to men, which has now changed.
In the face of global economic challenges, all employees are navigating adversity, and remote work has gained widespread acceptance as a viable practice, not only in India but also worldwide. Businesses that choose to eliminate work from home arrangements are witnessing an increase in resignations. A survey conducted in the United States revealed that 25 percent of workers opted never to return to the office.
