On a heart-wrenching day when the body of a 24-year-old student of Punjab-origin, who met a tragic end in Canada, was being brought back to Shaheed Bhagat Singh Nagar district for his final rites, another devastating incident unfolded. The mother of the deceased, aged 51, died by suicide, unable to bear the loss of her son.
The local police station in-charge received the distressing news from the family on a Friday morning, revealing that the incident occurred late on Thursday night. Preliminary investigations suggest that the woman was in a state of shock and immense grief following her son’s untimely demise in Canada.
Earlier, the Peel regional police homicide bureau in Canada had reported that the student was attacked while delivering pizza on Emerson Lane near Britannia Road in Mississauga on July 9. The assailant assaulted him and fled with his car, leaving the student in a critical condition. Despite the efforts of passers-by who rushed him to the hospital, he succumbed to his injuries on July 14.
The news of her son’s death was initially withheld from the mother, but as details surfaced, the shocking truth took its toll on her mental well-being.
Authorities in Canada found the student’s vehicle abandoned in the vicinity of Old Creditview and Old Derry roads, not far from the scene of the crime. Forensic examinations of the vehicle led to the retrieval of crucial pieces of evidence. The police clarified that there is currently no known connection between the victim and his attackers.
With the assistance of the consulate general of India in Toronto, the body of the young student was repatriated to India on July 27.
The promising youngster had arrived in Canada in 2021 with ambitious plans to establish his own business. In a poignant display of solidarity and remembrance, more than 200 people gathered at a candlelight vigil held in Mississauga four days before the body’s return to India.
This tragic incident serves as a stark reminder of the profound impact that such devastating events can have on the lives of families, friends, and communities, transcending borders and leaving a trail of grief in their wake.
