After a lot of uncertainty and crossing many hurdles, the 13th edition of Indian Premier League (IPL) has kick-started during the weekend in UAE. However, the matches are going on in the stadiums without spectators.
Nonetheless, the IPL made history in TV viewership. A staggering of 200 million people have watched the IPL opening match between Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings. BCCI secretary Jay Shah tweeted the same. “As per BARC, an unprecedented 20 crore people tuned in to watch the match. Highest ever opening day viewership for any sporting league in any country- no league has ever opened as big as this,” wrote Jay Shah.
“Thank you, India. It’s been a dream start to #Dream11IPL. We’ve recorded highest ever TV & DIGITAL viewership in IPL history,” tweeted the IPL twitter handle.
This unprecedented viewership is expected because people are not getting out and are confined to homes. Cricket fans especially Dhoni fans watched the opening match, because the Indian cricketer did not play a single match after ICC Cricket World Cup last year and then announced his retirement on Independence Day.
