Shikhar Dhawan and Prithvi Shaw’s blistering partnership and a settled performance by their bowlers ensured Delhi Capitals to register their second consecutive win in IPL 2020. They beat Chennai Super Kings by 44 runs. Young Rabada shined by taking three wickets. With this defeat, Chennai now has two losses in its first three games. Delhi topped the table with two consecutive wins.
Delhi came into bat after losing the toss to CSK. They got a good opening partnership from their openers, Dhawan (35) and Prithvi Shaw (64). Their 94-run stand has put Delhi in a solid position. Finally, Piyush Chawla dismissed Dhawan in the 11th over. Soon, he also dismissed Shaw. It looked like CSK was back in the game. But Rishab Pant and Shreyas Iyer played sensible knocks and put up a 58-run partnership. Finally, Delhi Capitals managed to score 175/3 in 20 overs. Chawla took two wickets by giving away 33 runs.
Chennai needed a good start in the powerplay to chase this total. But their opener Shane Watson got out in the bowling of Axar Patel in the fifth over. In the very next over, Nortje dismissed another opener, Murali Vijay, as well. This pushed CSK into further trouble. Within a couple of overs, Ruturaj Gaikwad also went back to the pavilion. du Plessis (43) and Kedhar Jadhav tried to save wickets from falling but the run rate kept on rising on the other side.
Eventually, Jadhav got out in the 16th over. du Plessis went back to the dressing room in the 18th over. Finally, Kagiso Rabada (3/26) dismissed Dhoni and Jadeja in the last over and took his team to the victory shore. Chennai ended its innings at 131/7. Chennai will next face Sunrisers Hyderabad on October 2. Delhi will also face SRH in their next match on September 29.
