A tragic incident unfolded in Lewiston, Maine, on October 25, 2023, where a series of mass shootings resulted in the loss of at least 22 lives and left 50 to 60 people injured, according to Reuters, as reported by NBC News. Maine State Police, along with county sheriff’s office, reported an active shooter situation but provided limited details.
Maine state police used the social media platform to urge residents to take shelter and stay indoors. Their message read, “There is an active shooter in Lewiston. We ask people to shelter in place. Please stay inside your home with the doors locked. Law enforcement is currently investigating at multiple locations.”
In an effort to seek public assistance, the Androscoggin County Sheriff’s Office shared two photos of the suspected shooter on Facebook. The images depict a bearded individual dressed in a long-sleeved shirt and jeans, brandishing a rifle in a firing position.
The Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston issued a statement, revealing that they were responding to a mass casualty event caused by a mass shooter, and were coordinating with nearby hospitals to provide care for the injured.
Lewiston, located in Androscoggin County, is approximately 35 miles (56 km) north of Portland, Maine’s largest city.
