US Ambassador to India, Eric Garcetti, has likened the evolving relationship between the United States and India to a romantic phase of dating, emphasizing shared values beyond considerations related to China.
Speaking at the Carnegie ‘Global Technology Summit’ in New Delhi, Garcetti humorously compared the historical complexity of the relationship to a Facebook status of ‘it’s complicated,’ suggesting that the countries are now in a phase of active engagement, akin to dating.
He highlighted that the relationship is primarily driven by factors beyond the China issue, citing peace, prosperity, planet, and people as the key elements shaping the bilateral agenda.
Garcetti acknowledged challenges in the deep and broad nature of the relationship, including the need to enhance economic engagement, with current interactions representing only two percent of the US economy. He also noted India’s preference for geometric diplomacy involving trilateral and quadrilateral alliances due to challenges in the multilateral and bilateral spaces.
