Once again, Kings XI Punjab failed to perform well and tasted its third loss in the first four games. They lost to Mumbai Indians by 48 runs. While the other losses came by a close margin, this defeat came by a big margin. An all-round effort from Mumbai Indians resulted in their second win of the season.
After winning the toss, KXIP captain KL Rahul elected to bowl first. Mumbai failed to get a good start from the openers once again as Quinton de Kock got bowled right in the first over. Even Surya Kumar Yadav fell soon and pushed Mumbai into further trouble. But Rohit Sharma (70) and Ishan Kishan played sensible innings and set up a platform for Mumbai. Ishan fell in the bowling of Krishnappa Gowtham while trying for a big shot. After his dismissal, Rohit got good support from Kieron Pollard (47). Soon, Rohit completed his second half-century of the season. When he looked dangerous, Shami sent him back to the pavilion. However, Pollard then took care of things with Hardik Pandya (30) and gave Mumbai a huge total of 191/4.
Punjab never looked to be in the chase as Mumbai bowlers started to take the wickets at regular intervals. Krunal Pandya dismissed Mayank Agarwal right in the fourth over. After that, every other batsman like Karun Nair, KL Rahul, Glenn Maxell and Jimmy Neesham started falling without putting any effort. Only Nicholas Pooran (44) played a good knock.
In the end, Punjab managed to end the innings by scoring 143/8. Bumrah, Rahul Chahar and Krunal Pandya took two wickets each. Boult and Pattinson got one wicket each. Mumbai will next face Sunrisers Hyderabad and Kings XI Punjab will take on Chennai Super Kings on October 4.
