In the last 24 hours, India has reported 841 new Covid-19 cases, bringing the total to 4,309 as of Sunday (31st Dec, 2023). This marks a slight decrease from the 865 cases recorded on May 19.
The data from the Ministry of Health indicates three new fatalities in the same period, with one each reported from Kerala, Karnataka, and Bihar. The cumulative number of Covid-19 cases in India since the outbreak in January 2020 now stands at 4,50,13,272, and the death toll has reached 5,33,361.
Moreover, the country has documented a total of 145 cases of the Covid-19 subvariant JN.1 as of December 28. These cases were identified in samples collected between November 21 and December 18. The JN.1 subvariant stems from the Omicron subvariant known as BA.2.86 or Pirola, with Kerala being the first state to report a case.
On a positive note, the overall recovery from the disease has surpassed 4.4 crore individuals, reflecting a national recovery rate of 98.81 percent. The country has also administered a total of 220.67 crore doses of Covid vaccines, as per the available data.
