Popular Hollywood actress Scarlett Johansson is heard to be shocked and angered that OpenAI would use a synthetic voice that is so similar to hers when they released an update to ChatGPT.
OpenAI halted the update upon these comparisons. The artificial voice known as Sky is also being criticized for its allegedly ‘flirtatious’ tone. The voice is similar to that of Scarlett’s voice in the movie ‘Her’ where she plays the AI voice assistant with who the protagonist falls in love.
Scarlett Johansson said the OpenAI CEO Sam Altman offered to hire her last year to voice the ChatGPT 4.0 system. Scarlett said he declined the offer for personal reasons.
Scarlett hired a legal counsel and said OpenAI reluctantly agreed to take down the ‘Sky’ voice after her counsel sent two letters to Altman. OpenAI CEO reportedly contacted Scarlett’s manager to reconsider his offer just two days before the release of ChatGPT 4.0 demo was released.
‘In a time when we are all grappling with deepfakes and the protection of our own likeness, our own work, our own identities, I believe these are questions that deserve absolute clarity. I look forward to resolution in the form of transparency and the passage of appropriate legislation to help ensure that individual rights are protected,’ Johansson wrote.
