Recently, a Bollywood movie titled Crew, set in the aviation industry, hit the theatres. The film, starring Tabu, Kareena Kapoor Khan and Kriti Sanon, revolves around three air hostesses who start smuggling gold after their employers stop paying salaries for more than six months.
Crew went on to perform well in the box office and is now streaming on Netflix. The film took its inspiration from a host of real-life incidents including smuggling cases and the infamous Vijay Mallya Kingfisher Airlines case. Recently, an air hostess from Kolkata was busted smuggling gold red-handed, which led people to draw parallels with the film.
Surabhi Khatun, a 26 year old air hostess from Kolkata was arrested recently after 960 gms of gold was found concealed in her private parts. Another senior crew member named Sohail, who hails from the Kannur region in Kerala, was also arrested.
The arrests were made by the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) in Thiruvananthapuram. The DRI suspects that there is a larger smuggling operation and more crew members from Air India might be involved in it and the investigation is still in process.
