An Indian American technology executive Sriram Krishnan has been appointed as Artificial Intelligence (AI) advisor to President-elect Donald Trump.

This appointment of Sriram Krishnan has triggered a heated debate on social media among political factions, particularly in the Trump-supporting Make America Great Again (MAGA) base.

The social media debate included hatred against Krishnan along with other high-skilled Indian Immigrants. The uproar has critiques of Krishnan’s policies and broader immigration reform. Krishnan earlier advocated for removing country caps on green cards and expanding the H1B visa program have critics arguing that such policies will undermine the ‘America First’ principles.

Krishnan has been on the receiving end of online attacks from those opposed to the H1B visa program. Far-right activist Laura Loomer, known for her inflammatory rhetoric on social media, criticized Krishnan’s appointment, arguing it goes against Trump’s campaign promises on immigration.

Krishnan’s appointment was announced to ensure “continued American leadership in AI,” working closely with David Sacks, another high-profile Silicon Valley tech figure named as the White House AI & Crypto Czar.

Trump’s official statement highlighted Krishnan’s role in ‘helping shape and coordinate AI policy across government, including working with the President’s Council of Advisors on Science and Technology.’ His appointment has been appreciated by tech leaders for bringing substantial tech expertise into the government.
