Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is expected to announce his resignation as leader of the ruling Liberal Party on Monday.
According to the reports, Justin Trudeau will remain prime minister until a new leader is chosen.
Trudeau has been the leader of the Liberal Party for 11 years and prime minister of Canada for nine years. Ahead of a general election to be held later this year, Justin Trudeau is expected to lose to the opposition party Conservative Party.
“It’s become obvious to me with the internal battles that I cannot be the one to carry the liberal standard into the next election,” Trudeau said. Trudeau said he made the decision over the holidays and asked Liberal Party leaders on Sunday to begin the process for selecting a new leader.
The election is likely to be held on or before October 20 and could be advanced.
