The Trump administration terminated thousands of probationary workers on Thursday in a mass layoff.
Employees who have been working for less than a year, or two years in some cases have fewer job protections and lack the right to appeal. More than 220,000 who have typically been employed for less than a year have worked within the federal government.
The cuts targeted probationary workers across all departments, including the Department of Education and Small Business Administration the US Forest Service, the Department of Veterans Affairs, and the agency that oversees the nation’s fleet of nuclear weapons.
Veteran Affairs dismissed more than 1000 from about 43000 probationary employees producing an estimated savings of about $98 million. The full count of the layoffs across the federal workforce will be available soon.
