In a devastating tragedy, at least 16 migrant workers, who were on their way to home in Chhattisgarh, were run over by a goods train near Aurangabad Maharashtra on Friday morning at around 6:30 am. The mishap also left one worker severely injured.
As per the reports, the migrants used to work at an iron factory in Jalna. They were walking along the railway tracks on the Auranngabad-Jalna railway line and slept beside the tracks due to exhaustion caused by the long journey under harsh sun yesterday.
The victims set out to walk a distance of nearly 170 km. They were resting after covering a distance of 45 km when the accident happened between Badnapur and Karmad stations.
The incident once again throws light on the heart-wrenching plight of the poor migrant workers who have been struggling to go back to their hometowns after losing their livelihood due to the lockdown amidst Coronavirus pandemic.
Even though the governments and the railways began plying passenger trains to shuttle the migrants, confusion surrounding singing up for the journey and inability to pay for the ticket fares have forced many workers to walk hundreds of kilometres to reach their homes.
