IPL: Hyderabad Kept As The Standby Venue

Published by

As Maharashtra is witnessing the highest number of cases in the country, with the situation going from bad to worse, the Indian cricket board (BCCI) has kept Hyderabad as a standby venue for the Indian Premier League (IPL) matches, especially after Maharashtra is on the verge of lockdown.

Maharashtra’s Chief Minister Uddav Thackeray warned that there might be a lockdown in the next 48 hours if the situation goes out of hand. Since there are indications of lockdown from the Maha government, Hyderabad has emerged as a backup venue option.

The IPL 2021 is scheduled to be held across six venues. The first phase of the matches will be held in Chennai and Mumbai, the second phase in Ahmedabad and Delhi and the last phase will be held in Bengaluru and Kolkata.

The playoffs and the final are scheduled to be held in Ahmedabad, probably in May 2021, and not to mention, all the matches will be played behind closed doors with no public allowed at the venues. In 2020 IPL, the board conducted the matches in the UAE due to the Covid-19 pandemic. However, this year’s IPL will be held in India, followed by the T20 World Cup in winter later this year.
