India has hit a grim milestone yesterday and broke all its previous records as the country reported over 1 lakh coronavirus cases in the past 24 hours. This is the highest single-day surge in COVID-19 cases so far.
Ever since the pandemic began, yesterday’s 1,03,794 cases are the highest in the country and the previous recorded highest single-day spike was on September 16, 2020, at 97,984 cases in a day. The active cases in the country are 7,37,870.
The last 24 hours also witnessed 477 casualties due to the virus and the death toll skyrocketed to 1,65,132. As Maharashtra still remains the most affected state in India, it broke all previous records with 57,074 new COVID-19 infections on Sunday.
In Telangana, the cases have been tripled in just one week, reporting 1,097 fresh COVID-19 cases on Monday. The total cases in the state are now over 3.13 lakh, while the death toll rose to 1,723 with six more fatalities in the last 24 hours. In Andhra, we have 1,730 new infections on Sunday and it is the highest single-day tally in 144 days
