On Wednesday afternoon, the Bengaluru city has observed something peculiar and unusual booming sound. Soon after netizens from the city started discussing the strange sound on social media, with pouring wild guesses. As per the information received, the ear-splitting sound was heard in Bengaluru’s Whitefield area, at nearly 1:45 PM.
A few locals described the sound as a big boom and a ‘thunderous noise’. Also a few said that their homes and windows shook for as long as five seconds, leaving them settled for the thought that it was an earthquake. But, Karnataka State Natural Disaster Management Centre confirmed that it was not an earthquake and seismometers have not recorded any spoke.
Bengaluru also observed similar mysterious sounds in 2005 and 2018. Bengaluru’s Police Commissioner, Bhaskar Rao confirmed that there was no damage anywhere and no one has called to the emergency 100 number. Cops also said that they have asked the Air Force Control Room to check if the sound was from a flight and they are currently awaiting confirmation. Because there was activity by the Indian Air Force in the skies today and the booming sound was heard across eastern Bengaluru from the International Airport.
Therefore, it is believed so far that it could be a sonic boom, which means, a sound created whenever an object travels through the air faster than the speed of sound, like the result of fast movement of aircraft. The sonic boom is more prominent and phenomenon when shock waves are created in the atmosphere when an object moves faster than the speed of sound. The sonic booms are equivalent to an explosion or a thunderclap to the human ear.
But a very few netizens argued on Twitter that it was not a sonic boom. “I heard the recorded sound. I can guarantee it wasn’t a sonic boom. I have 35 years of hearing sonic boom experience,” wrote one user. Earthquake? Explosion? The supersonic boom of Mirage? we don’t know. With a number of TV channels churning out various theories, we have to wait and see how the mystery unravels. But, we can conclude that there has been no visible damage to the property or life.
