BCCI announced annual player retainership for the year 2020-21 the other day. The senior men of Team India are divided into four categories and the payment structure will depend on the category a player falls in. Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, and Jasprit Bumrah were mentioned in the A+ category.
A total of 10 players were included in the A category. Five players are mentioned in the B category and 10 players were named in the C category. After the list was out, there was a mixed response from fans. Many of them opined that Ravindra Jadeja should have been mentioned in the A+ category. Some others fans opined that the BCCI should have given contracts to young players like Natarajan, Ishan Kishan, and Surya Kumar Yadav.
Natarajan debuted in three international formats last year. He also performed well for Team India. Thus, his snub came in as a surprise for many. But as per the rules of BCCI, a player who played at least three tests or seven ODIs or 10 T20is, is eligible for the contract. As Natarajan played only one Test, two ODIs, and four T20is, he is not eligible for the annual contract.
