Soon private commercial space travel is going to be a reality and some big names are coming forward to bid for it. Amazon founder and CEO Jeff Bezos whose space company, Blue Origin has been making news for quite some time now, is targeting the bidding process of private commercial space travel to be held on July 20th.
Blue Origin has developed it’s own spacecraft, Shepard and it is designed to autonomously fly six passengers above Earth into suborbital space. This will give the passengers enough to experience for a few minutes to see the curvature of the planet.
However, this Shepard which is a rocket cum capsule travel is going to be an expensive deal. Though Blue Origin declined to comment on the cost of the space travel, it is rumoured that it would charge $200,000 (Rs 1.5 Crore) per passenger and only six passengers would be able to travel in the rocket cum capsule.
Who would pour down Rs 1.5 crore for a few minutes of space travel? Yes Blue Origin is targeting the celebrities and Uber rich billionaires across the globe for this commercial space travel.
Depending on the response and success of this commercial space travel, Blue Origin wants to expand its frequency and also outside the United States. Blue Origin’s Director of Astronaut Sales, Ariane Cornell said only 569 people have travelled in space so far and this is going to change dramatically.
But Blue Origin is far behind Tesla CEO Elon Musk’s SpaceX which is set to create history with its first all space civilian spaceflight. To compete with SpaceX, Bezos has been funding Blue Origin and so he is selling his shares worth USD billions. In a few months Bezos will step down as Amazon CEO and by time he wants to fund Blue Origin as much as he can.
