On February 25th, the Electronics & Information Technology Ministry of India introduced a new set of rules to regulate digital content featuring a code of ethics and a three-tier grievance redressal framework and gave a three-month deadline to all social media platforms. Social media giants like Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram were also on this list. The government gave a three months deadline to implement these rules.
These new rules also include all social media companies need to appoint a chief compliance officer, a nodal contact person, and a resident grievance officer, who are the residents of India. However, it is being learned that except KOO, none of the other social media giants has implemented these rules. The deadline will end today.
Apparently, the center had warned the social media giants that the failure of compliance with the rules laid down would lead to the companies losing their status and protection as Intermediaries. It may also allow the government to take criminal action on these companies. In short, the major social media platforms like Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram may face a ban in the country.
According to the sources, some companies requested the government to extend the deadline to six months while some others informed that they are yet to receive an order from their Headquarters. The government questioned why these companies need to get orders from the headquarters while they are generating most of the revenue from India.
